GCSEs at an online school – what parents need to know

If you’re considering online schooling for your child at GCSE level, you’re likely already asking a lot of questions. How does it actually work? Are the qualifications recognised? What happens when it comes to exams? These are all reasonable things to want to understand before making a decision.

The good news is that studying GCSEs online is a well-established and legitimate route to fully recognised qualifications. At TLC LIVE, students in Years 10-11 study IGCSEs, the international equivalent of standard UK GCSEs, which are accepted by colleges, universities and employers both in the UK and across the world.

In this blog, we’ll break down everything you need to know about how (I)GCSEs work at an online school.

How do online GCSE lessons work?

Every online school will work with specific IGCSE or GCSE awarding bodies and follow an approved curriculum. At TLC LIVE Online School, this works in much the same way as a mainstream school, except that all teaching takes place in a live, virtual classroom. Lessons are delivered by fully qualified teachers and follow a structured timetable across the academic year, so students can expect the same level of teaching quality and curriculum coverage as they would in a traditional school setting.

At TLC LIVE Online School, classes are capped at a maximum of nine students. This low student-to-teacher ratio means every pupil receives more individual attention, more targeted feedback, and more opportunities to ask questions than is typically possible in a larger mainstream classroom.

We also operate a no-cameras policy during lessons, with the exception of registration and Art and Design lessons. This creates a more relaxed, pressure-free environment that helps students focus on their learning, particularly for those who experience anxiety in traditional classroom settings.

What subjects can students study?

Online schools can offer a broad range of subjects at GCSE level. At TLC LIVE Online School, students study the core IGCSEs of English Language, English Literature, Mathematics and Science (Double Award), and can choose two additional subjects from Geography, History, Religious Studies, Global Citizenship, Business, and Art and Design.

When choosing subjects, it is worth thinking ahead. Most colleges and sixth forms require passes in English Language and Maths as a minimum, so these are an important foundation if this is the future route for your child. University courses will also require these for most subjects and future employers also often look for a pass in Maths and English Language so this is something to keep in mind.

Beyond that, subject choices should reflect your child’s interests and strengths. If you are unsure which combination is right for your child, take a moment to think of what their passions outside of school are and see if they fit into one subject best. Make sure to talk to them too and factor in any long-term goals.

How do GCSE exams work for online students?

This is one of the most common questions parents ask, and it is an important one. While students study from home, GCSE and IGCSE exams must still be sat in person at an approved exam centre. This is a requirement for all GCSE-level qualifications, regardless of how a student has studied, though there are plans to make some GCSEs available to take online in the future.

Students at online schools register as private candidates, meaning they book their exam place directly with an authorised centre, such as a local school, college or private exam venue. For IGCSEs specifically, there are two exam sittings per year, which offers a little more flexibility than standard GCSEs.

It is worth planning this well in advance. Exam entry deadlines vary by centre and exam board, and not every centre will accept private candidates for every subject, so it is important to confirm this early. Your online school provider should be able to point you in the right direction, even if the booking process itself is your responsibility to manage. There is a cost to each exam taken and this varies from subject and exam board.

At TLC LIVE Online School, structured mock exams also form an important part of exam preparation, giving students the chance to practise under timed conditions, build confidence and identify areas to focus on before sitting the real thing.

What about required practical work and coursework?

Some GCSEs require practical work (such as Science) and others require coursework (such as Art and Design), so how does this work with online learning?

Online schools are setup to enable students to complete all requirements for their qualifications. How that works will be different depending on the subject and the online school.

At TLC LIVE Online School, we ensure that students enjoy rich and varied experience across all subjects, with our incredible teachers bringing the curriculum to life through in-depth work on practical activities and by providing on-going support for coursework (as applicable).

For example, in the case of Art and Design, coursework is carried out through supervised lessons and in Science, practical investigations are embedded into lessons, so there’s plenty of time to develop students’ knowledge and experimental skills throughout  the course.

Are online GCSEs fully recognised?

Yes – GCSEs and IGCSEs taken by online students are fully recognised by colleges, sixth forms, universities and employers, provided the qualification has been completed through an approved exam board and the exams have been sat at an authorised centre.

The certificate your child receives will show the subject, grade and exam board. It will not indicate whether they studied online or in a traditional school, and admissions teams and employers treat both routes equally.

Why do families choose online schooling for GCSEs?

Families come to online schooling for all kinds of reasons, and there is no single profile of a student who thrives in this environment. Some of the most common reasons include:

  • Specialist SEND support and a more adaptable learning environment
  • Greater flexibility to fit around performance/health needs and family circumstances
  • Smaller class sizes and more personalised learning
  • School anxiety or difficulties in mainstream settings
  • Being home educated from the start
  • Easier tracking of progress
  • Relocating or living internationally while needing UK-recognised qualifications
  • Retaking specific subjects to improve grades

Whatever the reason, online schooling offers a structured and flexible route to recognised qualifications for a wide range of learners.
